INDIAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION (ILA)

The year 1933 happens to be the most significant year in the history of Library and Information Science in India. It was September 13, 1933 when Indian Library Association was formally formed at the First All India Library Conference at Calcutta.

• Formally formed at the First All India Library Conference at Calcutta.
• First president of ILA: Dr. M. O. Thomas (1933-37)
• Current president of ILA: Prof. B. D. Kumbar (2019-22)
• First Lifetime member of ILA: S. R. Ranganathan.
• K.M. Asadullah- first secretary Of Indian Library Association.
• The ILA is the member of COMLA ( International Federation of Library Association & Common Wealth Library Association)

ILA OFFICE

• Since 1933- Office at Imperial Library, Calcutta (for 12years)
• 1946 - shifted to Delhi University (till 1953)
• 1953- Back to calcutta 
• August 1964 - Delhi public library, Delhi
• April, 1982 - Office of Association is housed in its own one room flat located in commercial building in New Delhi.
